How to find a good niche for your Build A Niche Store?

Posted by admin

Here’s the model I follow when looking for niches for a Build A Niche Store.

  • General Direction- Think of something you enjoy. Something you may know a little about. For instance, I like golf. I play golf. I read about golf, so I know a little about the subject.
  • Use eBay Pulse- Once you have a mega-theme isolated, use eBay Pulse to narrow your category down.  I’ll usually make a list of 5 categories that are hot. For golf, it may be Taylormade irons, golf bags, animal headcovers or something like that. The point is, you now have 5 specific categories to work with.
  • Use Google Trends- I enter all 5 categories into Google Trends. Google then kicks out a search volume graph. You really have no idea how many searches are done, but you can guage relative volume from one category to the next. Obviuosly, you will want to pick the 3 categories with the highest volume of searches.
  • Use GTrends- I love GTrends, it’s a free tool from Wordtracker. I use GTrends to find a niche that has high search traffic with low competition.
    • GTrends gives a guage of about how many searches are run per day for a specific niche.
    • GTrends gives some additional longtail keyword ideas.
    • GTrends shows me keyword competition.
    • Gtrends shows me anticipated click traffic if I can get the number 1 position.
  • Analyse all of the data you collected- What I look for is…
    • Average sale for an item is over $100.
    • High search volume, over 100 searches per day.
    • Low competition, under 20,000 competing pages.
  • Choose a niche or start over- Now you have done the research and should have an educated guess about how the niche should perform.  As a general rule of thumb, I don’t choose a niche unless I hit 3 out of 3 in my analysis phase. So, the niche has to have an average sale over $100, at least 100 searches per day and be under 20k competing pages.

Niche selection is critical to your store’s success. You can put all the time and effort into a store, but if there is no search volume you won’t get any traffic. No traffic equals low sales. Low sales equals wasted effort. However, you may find a high traffic niche that only pays out $0.25 a sale. Again, probably a waste of your effort.

The trick is to find a profitable niche, with search volume and low competition. The method I outlined above guarantees you the best chance at uncovering you next big money maker.
